Knitting for Beginners – The Purl Stitch – Easy Knitting Video

Next on the list is how to knit the purl stitch. Instead of going through the front of try stitch like we did for the knit stitches, we are going to pull the yarn forward to the front of the work and make the stitches from back to front.

Once again, make a swatch of 15 – 20 stitches and practice the stitch until you feel comfortable.

One of the most common mistakes that you’ll make doing this stitch is forgetting to pull your yarn forward. This will cause there to be more stitches than the original number of stitches you casted on to start the swatch.

Alternating rows of knitting and purling (i.e. knit one row, purl one row), gives you the stockinette pattern. I show what this look like at the end of the video. It is also what many knitting patterns use to determine gauge.
